2017 Inductees

Dr. Kamal Masaki

Geriatric Medicine

Dr. Kamal Masaki is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Geriatric Medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawai‘i Mānoa.  She was the Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program for 8 years, and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.  She was elected to be a Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society.  She has performed aging research for over 27 years, and has been an Investigator and Clinical Director for many large longitudinal epidemiologic studies.  She is the Director of the John A. Hartford Foundation Center of Excellence in Geriatrics at the University of Hawaii, and Co-Principal Investigator for the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (HRSA grant).  She has a strong track record for mentoring medical students, residents, fellows and junior faculty in aging research.  She has received numerous teaching and research awards, and was selected by Hawaii physicians to "The Best Doctors in America" 3 times.  She is a co-author on over 250 publications in scientific journals.

 

Dr. William Fong

Obstetrics-Gynecology

Dr. William L.T. Fong attended the John A. Burns School of Medicine before it even offered a four-year curriculum, transferring to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine to earn his M.D. in 1974.  After a gap year for reflection, he returned to Hawaii to complete an Ob-Gyn residency in 1979.  He was in a private practice for 26 years, then in 2005 joined the JABSOM faculty as Assistant Professor in the Department of Ob, Gyn and Women’s Health.  In 2012, he became an honorary faculty inductee of AOA, which would have astonished some of his medical school professors.  He retired at the end of 2017.  While a faculty member, his primary responsibility (or challenge) was to manage the Professionalism curriculum for the department’s residency and medical student program. As a clinical staff member of Kapiolani Medical Center he chaired the Provider Assistance Committee (which monitors impaired physicians) and sat on the Bioethics Committee.  One of his most satisfying professional activities was serving on short-term medical missions projects to northeast China for ten years in a row.

2016 Inductees

Dr. William Haning

Psychiatry

Dr. William Haning is a tenured Professor of Psychiatry at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). Among his numerous roles at JABSOM, Dr. Haning has served as director training and research programs in Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry, Program Director of the Core Psychiatry Residency Training Program, and President of the JABSOM Alumni Association. In his tenure, he has received several teaching/academic awards, founded or chaired multiple community service boards and organizations, and in 2014 received the Hawaii Medical Association’s Physician of the Year Award. Dr. Haning has also served in the US Armed Services for 37 years. His roles have inculded the Reserve Force Surgeon for U.S. Marine Forces Pacific, 4th Marine Division Psychiatrist, and Captain in the Navy Reserve. He received the Legion of Merit for services to the U.S.Marine Corps as force surgeon. Dr. Haning’s interests include stimulant use disorders, forensic addiction medicine, and public policy

Dr. Stephen Yano

Pediatrics

Dr. Stephen Yano began his medical schooling at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of medicine, graduating in 1979. He spent his pediatric internship and R2 year with the University of Hawaii at Kapiolani medical center. He completed his pediatric residency at UCLA Harbor Medical Center in Los Angeles. He returned after his residency to Hawaii to begin a private practice with Children’s Medical Associates in 1982, where he currently works today. He has also taught the Healer’s Art elective course to first and second year medical students at JABSOM. His main motivation in his medical practice is to offer individualized care in a loving group care setting.

2015 Inductees

Dr. Linda Anegawa

Internal Medicine

After receiving her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Anegawa completed her Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.  She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, and has since accumulated over a decade of clinical experience in a variety of private practice and multispecialty clinical settings.  

Dr. Anegawa views her patients in a holistic context, emphasizing healthy lifestyles, fitness and weight management to treat chronic pain and disease.  She is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Pain Management, The Obesity Society, and The American College of Bariatric Physicians.   Dr. Anegawa is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

 

Dr. Anegawa helps shape education for the next generation of physicians as the Internal Medicine Clerkship Director for University of Hawaii’s medical students. She has won numerous teaching awards including Most Inspiring Faculty Member, the Gold Humanism Society Faculty Award, and the Kaiser Foundation Outstanding Clinical Teacher Award. Dr. Anegawa is also the founder of OSR’s new Weight Management Division.

Dr. David Horio

Anatomic and Clinical Pathology

Dr. David Horio is an Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and has been in practice for 44 years. Dr. Horio now serves as a full-time faculty member at the John A. Burns School of Medicine's (JABSOM) Office of Medical Education.  He is currently the co-director of the "MD3" unit at JABSOM, during which first-year medical students learn about hematology and nephrology.  Dr. Horio also serves as a regular Problem-Based Learning MD tutor, and has helped to foster the education and growth of generations of medical students.  In his spare time, Dr. Horio provides mentorship and guidance to medical students interested in rural and global health, through the Rural Health Interest Group and Global Health Interest Group as a faculty advisor.  In 2013, he participated in the Women's Health Interest Group fundraiser (pictured to the left and here: http://jabsom.hawaii.edu/what-those-valentines-day-hugs-and-chocolates-on-campus-were-all-about/).

2014 Inductees

Dr. Richard Kasuya

Medical Education, Internal Medicine

Richard Kasuya is the Associate Dean for Medical Education and Professor of Medicine at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. A graduate of JABSOM in 1989, Dr. Kasuya completed his residency training in general internal medicine and went on to complete a Fellowship in General Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Medical Education Research. In addition, he later earned his Masters Degree in (Medical) Education from the University of Southern California.

 

In addition to serving as a PBL tutor each year, Dr. Kasuya also participates in faculty development in areas including PBL case-writing, bedside teaching, evidence-based medicine, curriculum development and educational leadership. In 1996 he became the first clinician-educator from our medical school to receive the University of Hawaii Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Kasuya’s current projects include further developing the infrastructure for medical education and facilitating progress on strategic priorities across the medical education continuum.

Dr. Chad Koyanagi

Psychiatry

Dr. Chad Koyanagi is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry with the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.  He works in various clinical settings including the adult inpatient unit, emergency room, homeless shelter/outreach, domestic violence clinic, and rural primary care clinics.  Dr. Koyanagi has been advocating and helping victims of human trafficking for about 6 years.  He has been working with all of the amazing agencies and advocates who have dedicated their lives to victims of underage human trafficking.  He has also been trying to inspire medical students and medical/psychiatric residents to learn more about the complex problem of child sex trafficking and to become resources and advocates to these victims.
