Selection Process

Student members are selected at the end of the third year.  In the winter of third year, the entire class completes a peer nomination form (based on McCormick, et. al. 2007 Academic Medicine. 82(11):1033-1039).   Students are asked to name three of their peers who best represent the following characteristics:

  1. The classmates you would like to have work at your side in a medical emergency.

  2. The classmates who best personify the quote, "the secret of good patient care lies in caring for the patient."

  3. The classmates who have shown exceptional interest in service to their communities.

  4. The classmates who would be the best choices for a highly desired residency.

  5. The classmates you would want as the doctor for yourself or a loved one.

  6. The classmates who have the best listening skills with patients.

The top 25% of nominees who are in good academic standing are invited to apply for members in the GHHS JABSOM Chapter by submitting an essay on "what humanism in medicine means to me."  All applicants are reviewed by the selection committee who selects the top 10-15% of the third year class as GHHS JABSOM Chapter members.

*JABSOM recipients of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine awards are also members of our chapter.
